5 Skincare Tips for Combination Skin

Knowing how to deal with your skin type can feel pretty overwhelming, which is why I created this blog series where I give you 5 easy and helpful tips catered to your skin type. If you aren’t sure of your skin type, check out or ‘What Are the 5 Skin Types?’ blog!

Let’s dive into 5 Simple Tips for Combination Skin…(check out; Dry Skin Tips, Oily Skin Tips & Sensitive Skin Tips)

Use a Clay Mask

If you’re looking for a little extra treatment to your skin twice a week, try a clay mask. A clay mask can help draw out impurities and help your skin glow again. The science behind this mask is that when applied the clay sinks into your pores due to its absorbent properties, helping soak up and trap the excess oil on your skin. Once the clay mask is removed, you will notice a reduction in shininess in the oily areas of your face. There’s a whole range of other benefits which come with using clay masks such as, restoring the skins balance, brightening your skin and more!

Don’t Shy away from Moisturiser

When it comes to having oily skin in any regard, whether that's because you have an oily skin type, or just an oily t-zone, you still need to moisturise your face. I find that the word ‘moisturise’ can frighten those with oilier complexions because you think of a moisturiser being this thick, potentially oily cream which is going to make your skin even shinier. However, there are lots of different types of moisturisers, including lightweight options that will hydrate the parts that need it, and not worse the oily areas.

Treat different areas of your face accordingly

If you have combination skin, you will probably find that your cheeks and t-zone look differently. Most people will find that their t-zone can become oily whereas other parts of your face, like your cheeks, look quite dry, What you want to do is use different products to help tackle these different issues, this may seem a bit annoying but it will be so worth it when it comes to seeing end results. You’re going to want to use more hydrating products on those drier patches, compared to more lightweight products on those oilier parts of your face.

Be Careful with Makeup Too!

Now, I usually preach about researching your skincare products, and you definitely should in any situation as knowing certain ingredients and what they do can be so helpful for creating a skincare routine to your specific skin type. Now, I never really speak about the importance of also looking for certain products and/or ingredients in makeup. Like I just said in the previous point above, treating different parts of your face accordingly in skincare, you also want to do this with your makeup routine. When you’re using base products such as primer, you may find that you need to use a hydrating AND mattifying product. Similarly, when it comes to foundation look out for a product with a more natural finish, rather than those that are marketed as ‘glow’ or ‘mattifying’.

Make Toner Your Best Friend

There’s not much to say on this one, other than Toners are a really great product for those with combination skin, as they can really help hydrate dry patches, while also minimising oiliness at the same time. Although a toner can’t change your skin as dramatically, using one as part of your daily routine can help to rebalance and even out your combination skin.

Avoid Touching Your Face!

This is easier said than done because we are all guilty of it, but if you have oily or combination skin, this is one of the main culprits. You don’t realise but your hands carry so much bacteria which if you regularly touch your face, that bacteria may end up clogging your pores and on top of an already oily complexion, it adds to the risk of breakouts. Maybe try replacing that behaviour with something that keeps your hands busy such as having a stress ball you can play with, or just something similar. If you find that you can’t replace the habit, make sure to carry hand sanitiser to keep on top of keeping your hands clean to stop bacteria from transferring.

Remember that with Combination Skin you may find that your skin changes depending on factors such as hormonal changes and environmental settings, so be flexible and adapt to the changes your skin needs.
