In recent years, many people have made the jump into the world of natural skincare products, with everyone having differing reasons. The makeup and skincare market is mainly made up of synthetic products in comparison to naturally derived skincare. However, as we move with the times, we have seen an increase in the volume of companies offering all natural skincare products. Although synthetic skin care can be beneficial in many ways, natural skincare is paving the way for healthier skin and less damage to the environment.
It doesn’t come as a surprise to know that using natural skincare products are better for your skin as they are free from any harsh chemicals and irritants that could cause problems for you in the long run. Recently, natural products are starting to become more common practice however, using natural ingredients in our skincare routines has been around for years. In fact, researchers have been able to trace back all the way to the Ancient Egyptians who would use commonly found natural ingredients such as berries and milk to keep their skin healthy and glowing.
More recently, it has become a stark reality that if we continue to treat our Earth like we do, we will soon face the catastrophic consequences of Global Warming. Understandably, this is something which must be a joint effort around the planet, however, by making small changes to our everyday lives, we can help to slow the effects of Global Warming.
By switching to natural skincare, we are benefiting from the following:
Natural Products Often Contain Beneficial Properties -
Natural ingredients are free from harsh chemicals, parabens and SLS will not be toxic towards our skin's health. As a result, it will be less likely to have bad reactions to what we are applying to our face. Many natural ingredients have antioxidant properties which can help to draw out any dirt and grime stuck in our pores. As well as this, some natural ingredients like Witch Hazel have antiseptic effects that can reduce blemishes and redness on the skin.
Crucial Nutrients That the Body Does Not Produce -
When we use synthetic ingredients, our skin will be lacking in several crucial nutrients which we need to maintain the wellbeing of our skin. By using natural skincare ingredients which have been produced from plants and herbs, we are offered with a variety of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and more. All of which will help to aid the skin's ability to thrive. Common ingredients used in natural skincare products include cocoa butter, shea butter and beeswax, each of these being used to make creams and lip balms that we sell here at Sweet Cecily’s.
Cocoa Butter, a fatty vegetable oil derived from the Cocoa bean contains Vitamin E which is great for stimulating skin reproduction. Shea Butter which comes from the Shea tree has been found to be high in fatty acids. This is helpful in providing nourishment and protection to our skin. Beeswax is a natural ingredient produced by honeybees and it is full of Vitamin A therefore, using it in our skincare can slow down the effects of skin aging due to its ability to fight against free radicals.
Synthetic Skincare Products Contain Harmful Chemicals -
Parabens and Petrochemicals that are found in synthetic skincare products have been reported to disrupt our hormone function. Some scientists claim that even the smallest amount of synthetic preservatives found in skincare has a negative effect on the individual’s health. Hormone production can be increased when exposed to parabens which can cause our Estrogen levels to skyrocket and in time trigger the cell division to form tumours on the skin.
Natural Products Are Less Likely to Harm Animals -
It's no secret that many of the big brand companies test their products on animals. In fact, in 2020, almost 3 million tests were carried out on an animal. One of the main benefits of switching from synthetic to natural skincare is that the manufacturing process of natural skincare does not harm animals. We can harvest the ingredients from naturally producing plants and therefore, the process of making skincare becomes more ethical. So, if you are someone who firmly believe and understands that animal testing is wrong, using natural skincare is an important choice to make.
Natural Products Can Contribute Towards Protecting the Planet -
Petrochemical based products pollute not only our Water, but our Air and Soil too. When petrochemicals are made, they emit harmful chemicals into the air, whether this be through accidental release or the normal emissions that it produces. Air pollutants from the production of petrochemicals include Carbon monoxide and Hydrogen Sulphide, both of which contribute towards Global warming.
Research into the effect of these chemicals have determined that there is a link to people suffering with respiratory illnesses when in an area of high petrochemical pollution. Production of petrochemicals results in excess wastewater being released into streams and rivers. This water contains ammonia and sulphides which can have a damaging effect on our health and the environment around us when it enters the water that we drink.
Switching to natural skincare may put you off due to the price of some products however, the products do tend to go a long way and they will have a more positive impact on both our environment and ourselves.
