You may not realise it, but your skin tells the story of your life. It shows people if you spent a lot of time in the sun, if you smoke, if you’ve used a lot of skincare products or none and even if you’ve experienced long bouts of stress in your life. The face is a window to the soul, as they say!
Your skin will change with ongoing experiences, many of which are completely unavoidable. The key is learning how to manage these changes without them negatively impacting your self-confidence. To read more about the different stages your skin goes through head over to our Story of skin blog.
This blog will provide you with skincare tips that cater for your age group. Let’s start with some general tips that are useful for all ages:
- Drink lots of water – I know, I know. We sound like a broken record here! But we can’t stress enough how important drinking enough water is to maintain the health of your skin.
- Protect yourself from the sun – Remember to apply sun cream even when it’s not sunny or hot outside! It’s one of the best things you can do for your skin.
- Eat healthy – It’s important to have a balanced diet and by balance we don’t mean you have to cut all the fun stuff out, just try and make sure you’re eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables as not only will it make your insides happy, but it’ll also make the outsides happy too!
How do I Keep My Skin Healthy in My 20s?
You may be a 20 something year old reading this, thinking that skincare is a ‘future you’ problem or you may be the opposite; constantly trying out new products to help you in your goal towards flawless skin. However, we recommend you start taking steps to look after your skin sooner rather than later!
- Wash your face instead of using makeup wipes all the time
This is something we’re all guilty of, me included as a 23-year-old, but it’s definitely important to wash your face as well as using wipes. Although it may look like your makeup wipe has taken everything off your face, it won’t have cleaned out your pores. So, it’s important that you regularly wash your face with soap and water to help get rid of the dirt underneath the outer layer of your skin.
- Resist the urge to pop spots!
Regardless of how satisfying it is to pop a spot, it is absolutely not worth the potential permanent scarring. Treating acne can be as easy as applying a cream to help minimise redness and pain.
- Attempt to get at least 7 hours sleep a night
With different stages and ages in life, comes the different amounts of sleep you need a night. If you don’t sleep, your cortisol levels can go up, which can contribute to making your skin look inflamed. Although it doesn’t sound like much, sleeping the right amount can help your skin appear full of vitality, not to mention making it look smoother and plumper.
What Does My Skin Need in My 30s?
As you hit your 30s you may notice slight changes to your skin, however it can also be a really good time for your skin! Fine lines and wrinkles aren’t yet too prominent, but it may be a good time to start using products that cater more towards helping your skin age, rather than preventing it – because it’s going to happen anyway!
- Exfoliate!
By 30, your cell metabolism has already started to slow, which means your skin cells aren’t replacing themselves as regularly, so exfoliating your skin gives them the extra boost to do just that.
- Investing in an eye cream
Around your eyes is where the ageing of your skin first starts to show, due to a drop in collagen and elastin in your skin, so buying an eye cream – and actually using it! - is important during this stage. When applying your new eye cream, be gentle! The skin around your eyes is delicate and requires a softer touch than the rest of your face.
- Change your skincare products
When you’re in your 30s you may notice that your skin is a little bit drier – this is due to the reduction of sebum your skin is producing – so it’s best to use a product that increases the moisture levels of your skin
How Can I Improve My Skin in My 40s?
Once you hit 40 you may realise that suddenly the words used to describe skin suddenly switch from positive to negative, with words such as ‘sagging’ and ‘wrinkly’. However, the reality is that as you age, your skin will age with you. This is a process in which everyone is affected by sooner or later! During your 40s, you may begin experiencing symptoms of the perimenopause (in the years before menopause. You will begin to see differences in your skin during this stage of your life due to hormonal changes.
- Take care of your neck
When you’re thinking about developing your skincare routine, make sure to focus on your neck too! If you take care of your neck as well as your face, it will slow down the effects of ageing rather than your neck and face looking 2 different ages, so apply any products you’d apply to your face, to your neck as well.
- Night-time is your prime!
Did you know at night your skin repairs itself which makes moisturising at night key?! If you don’t already, it’s important to start using a night cream as it will hydrate your skin and make it look more glowy and soft.
- Try a Serum
Drench your skin in moisture with a serum! As your skin is producing less and less sebum along with being exposed to environmental aggressors, incorporate a rich serum to help fight free radicals.
What is the Best Skin Care For People Over 50?
As you get older and hormonal changes have changed primarily because of menopause, it can have a huge impact on your skin. The goal isn’t to make yourself look 20 again, but to keep your skin looking fresh and feeling as healthy as possible.
- Give yourself a facial massage
Use your fingertips or a tool to knead and contour your facial muscles. This helps to reduce fluid build-up in your face and to help improve blood flow.
- Keep it Humid!
Dry air is known for causing dry and rough skin, and it can cause your skin to flare up with rashes, red spots and flaking. You can keep it humid by using a humidifier or gently boil a pan of water on your kitchen stove so it slowly evaporates back into the air.
- Wear gloves while doing housework and gardening.
You may not realise, but your hands go through an awful lot on a daily basis. Whether you’re doing jobs around the house or in the garden, the skin on your hands can be exposed to a variety of elements that can cause dryness, such as household cleaners. Invest in a good pair of gloves so you can reduce the risk of irritating your skin.
Everyone’s experience with their skin is different, and while it is important to not compare yourselves too closely to others, it’s also important to remember that there’s others that feel the same way as you, whether that’s a positive or negative experience.
We want you to put your best self forward and embrace your own skin this summer!
